TL;DR
Depart around 9–10 PM, start climbing around midnight, allow 4–5 hours up. It gets cold at the summit even in summer — bring warm layers.
The group departed around 9–10 PM and began the climb at midnight, stopping first at the shop near St. Catherine's Monastery. The ascent took until 4–5 AM with breaks, descent started around 2 AM, followed by a monastery tour. They returned after midday. The trip was in March and it was cold — even in August warm clothing is recommended due to the altitude.
Buses are available on the mountain but the schedule is unclear, so many visitors walk. The stairway ascent in the heat is very demanding — the sheer number of steps can be overwhelming.
