Can you buy fresh mango in Sharm el-Sheikh and is it worth it?

To the left of the hotel (opposite Pickalbatros Moderna) there's a mall/shopping area where locals buy mango by the box; nearby stalls sell it for about $1.5–2 per kg.

Further up the street there are several more fruit stalls, and at Gomla Market mango currently sells for 35-40 EGP per kg.

Official Russian customs rules limit fruit imports to 5 kg per person, and it must fit within carry-on/baggage allowances — exact limits also depend on the airline.

Two mango stalls: the first — cross the road and walk right about 50 m (near the Metro store), medium-sized yellow mango, $2/kg. The second, further along (about 200 m in the same direction), has a bigger selection and fresher mango — 2 kg was carried to Russia as hand luggage and turned out excellent.

A fresh mango delivery was spotted at Spinneys in late June: it was sold at 45 EGP per kilogram. The fruit was displayed separately near the fruit section, with additional unopened boxes nearby.

From recent experience taking mango to Russia, some travelers felt it was not worth the hassle: carrying the box through airport checks and on the plane was inconvenient, and the taste did not seem better than mango available at home.

Based on last year's experience, a box of mango (~7 kg) was not counted toward the carry-on allowance — it was treated as a gift from the country and excluded from the weight limit. This may only apply during Egypt's mango season (August–September); imported mango out of season might be treated differently.

At shops including Mango Market, if you tell the seller you're taking the fruit to Russia, they will pack it for the flight, and at check-in these fruit boxes are not counted as carry-on luggage — they do not come out of the 5 kg allowance.

A shop next to the hotel (to the left of the entrance) sells frozen mango fresh juice in one-litre bottles for $2. It thaws quickly, making it convenient to take to the beach.

Mango purchased recently at Mango Market was extremely sour — reportedly even more acidic than lemons. Not recommended if you expect sweet tropical fruit.

Mango is sold at the George Clooney store for around $1/kg and they pack it in a box for carry-on transport. Note that duty-free purchases count toward your combined baggage and carry-on allowance.

When taking mango out of Egypt: Sharm el-Sheikh airport did not check the fruit, but customs on arrival in Belarus asked about fruits and weighed them. Check your home country's import rules before buying.
