Another clarification was that the relevant passport marking is not placed in advance; any document handling happens after arrival in India, not before entry.

Reports from Goa say travelers with visa issues were usually not escorted in custody or locked in the airport holding cell, even though such a cell exists. Instead, they waited under supervision, and the passport could be taken and handed to the cabin crew, for example on a flight to Vietnam.
