TL;DR

Thomas Beach is great for first-timers: board + rash guard rental for 500k IDR, beginner-friendly waves. Nusa Dua also has walk-in surf lessons available on the spot.

Thomas Beach is ideal for a first surf lesson. A local instructor charges 500k IDR for a board and rash guard. After about 10 minutes of theory on the shore, you head straight into the ocean — waves are beginner-friendly and many people stand up on their first try. Note: swimming here is difficult due to strong waves, shallow depth, and rocky bottom. Sun lounger rental is 150k IDR for two.

Padang Padang beach, near Thomas Beach, is better for swimming than surfing. It gets very crowded, there are monkeys, and the entrance through a gorge is scenic. Entry fee is around 20k IDR per person.

Melasti Beach is a relaxed spot for sunbathing — sun loungers cost 200k IDR, towel rental 40k IDR. Several beach clubs on site. Not a surf spot, but good for a chill beach day.
