Rental shops typically won't ask for an international license when you rent a scooter. However, if you get into an accident without a proper motorbike license and an IDP, your insurance will be void and you'll be covering all costs out of pocket.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a standalone license — it is simply a multilingual translation of your existing national license so local police can verify your vehicle category endorsement. It is invalid without your original license.

To ride legally and stay insured in Bali, you need three things: a valid motorbike license from your home country, an IDP, and insurance that covers motorcycles. Missing any one of these could leave you fully liable for accident costs.

Travelers from ASEAN countries can use their national driver's license directly in Indonesia without an IDP. Everyone else must carry both their home country license and a valid International Driving Permit.
