TL;DR
August in Bali is hot — no layers needed. Pack light, do laundry for around $2/kg, and buy anything you forgot locally.
An experienced traveler recommends flying with just 7 kg carry-on to force yourself to pack light. On the return flight, you can add a 20 kg checked bag for Bali purchases.
Don't bother packing a rain poncho — they're easy to buy in Bali. Even during rain it stays warm and humid, so a poncho is more about staying dry than keeping warm.
You can wear singlets, shorts, and light cotton dresses all day in Bali. The only place you might want a jumper or long pants is on the plane.
One thin long-sleeve shirt and a light scarf or shawl is the most you'd ever need for an occasional breeze. Most travelers never end up using even that.
Drop off laundry once during your trip for around $2/kg. That means you can get by with just 2 pairs of shorts and 6 t-shirts for the whole stay.
A solid 8-day packing list: 2 pairs of linen pants (for evening mosquito protection), a couple of wrap skirts, 2 shorts, 5–6 t-shirts, 2 dresses, 2 swimsuits. A lightweight neutral cardigan is only needed for the flight.
A sarong is the most versatile item you can pack: use it as a blanket on the plane, a wrap skirt, or a temple cover-up. It takes up almost no space and replaces multiple clothing items.
If you forget something or run out, Bali has plenty of shops. Clothes, accessories, and essentials are easy to buy locally — often cheaper than back home.
