How to choose a Maldives island resort for first-timers: alcohol, transfers, and island hopping

Two popular options for first-timers are Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon and Medhufushi Island Resort — both are classic single-resort islands. If you're active, check with the hotel whether they offer day trips or water taxi service to nearby islands, as many resorts do.

Island hopping is very much possible from resort islands. Most resorts offer organized excursions or can arrange water taxis to nearby local or uninhabited islands. This is worth confirming with the hotel before booking if you plan to explore beyond your resort.

Alcohol is only legally available on resort islands and liveaboard boats in the Maldives. Local inhabited islands are dry by law. If drinking is important to you, book a resort island rather than a guesthouse on a local island.
