What is the difference between a resort island and a local island in the Maldives?

Package tours to local islands can also be booked through tour operators (not just arranged independently) — prices for such packages are quite reasonable.

Excursion pricing differs: at a resort the price is usually per person and depends on distance, while on a local island the excursion is often priced per whole boat (which can then be split among passengers).

A resort island functions like an all-inclusive hotel on its own island — you arrive and rarely leave the property. A local island means independent travel: you arrange your own transfer, stay in a guesthouse, and organize all activities yourself.

On local islands (e.g. Dhigurah), excursions are arranged through local operators. Resorts offer their own tours at their own prices, and third-party boats are generally not permitted to pick up guests from resort islands.

For resort stays, booking through a travel agent in advance is recommended — availability on arrival is not guaranteed, and on-site prices are consistently higher than pre-booked rates.
