Which coast of Sri Lanka is best to visit in June, July and August?

In July, decent weather is not limited to the east coast: northern Sri Lanka is also usually dry and relatively calm, but Jaffna suits travelers interested in a less touristy region rather than a standard beach resort.

The south and west are low season in summer, but they can still work if you accept the trade-offs: fewer crowds and often decent weather, but seasonal winds can make the sea rough. In that case, larger, better-established bases are recommended, such as Unawatuna, the Weligama area, and Hiriketiya.

If considering Tangalle in summer, it is valued for beautiful uncrowded beaches and a secluded feel, but the sea is not always fully calm and waves are common. Within that area, Unakuruwa is mentioned as one of the quieter spots.

The east coast in summer offers three distinct options: Trincomalee (Uppuveli beach in town, Nilaveli beach nearby) for relaxed beach holidays; Pasikuda for all-inclusive package resorts; and Arugam Bay for surfing and a lively social scene.

Cultural highlights are concentrated in the central highlands: Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla, plus Anuradhapura, Mihintale, and Polonnaruwa. National parks are spread island-wide, though Yala is closest to the south. The central mountains are accessible year-round.

Tangalle and Habaraduwa are quieter alternatives in summer with fewer crowds. Waterfalls are located in the central highlands and are roughly equidistant from any coast.

Trincomalee and Nilaveli on the east coast offer exceptionally calm, clear water in summer — a stark contrast to the rough west coast. Many tour operators fail to inform travelers about this seasonal advantage of the east coast.

Diving and snorkeling in Hikkaduwa in August is not recommended — rough seas and poor visibility make it off-season. For underwater activities in summer, choose the east coast: Trincomalee or Pasikuda. Cultural and historical sites in the central highlands are accessible year-round from any coast.
