Where can I use a UnionPay card in Dubai/UAE, and where might it not work?

TL;DR
UnionPay cards work at most commercial terminals in the UAE, but are declined at government-run payment systems (fees, some boutiques/hotels) and at 'GCC only' merchants, especially outside Dubai (e.g. in Liwa).

UnionPay doesn't work for online purchases on regional sites or .ae e-commerce stores — the card can't be linked.
