Do police stop foreigners riding scooters without a Vietnamese license in Da Nang?

Tourists are technically not permitted to ride scooters in Vietnam without a Vietnamese license, so most foreigners use an International Driving Permit (IDP). Some locals themselves are unclear on the rules and may give conflicting advice.

Police checkpoints rarely target foreigners. When both a local and a tourist are riding nearby, officers almost always pull over the Vietnamese rider rather than the foreigner.

There's a noticeable difference in riding styles on Da Nang roads: younger riders and newcomers tend to signal and warn others. Older locals, especially elderly women, often ride without looking or signalling and may pull out from the right without warning — something to watch out for.
