TL;DR
From Da Nang, bus #2 to Hoi An costs about 30,000 VND (~$1.2), or take a taxi/scooter — the road is flat and easy. For taxis, ask for the An Hoi Bridge / Old Town entrance area, close to the riverside where the lantern boats depart at sunset.
For the sunset lantern boat ride, head to the riverside promenade next to the Old Town market — that's where the boats, market stalls and riverside cafes are concentrated.
For a taxi, don't just say 'Hoi An Old Town' — give the driver the An Hoi Bridge as the drop-off point, it's a couple of minutes' walk from the main sights and the boat pier.
From Da Nang, you can take bus #2 to Hoi An for about 30,000 VND (~$1.2), grab a taxi, or ride a scooter — the coastal road is flat, so even a beginner rider can handle it.
On a scooter, avoid cutting through the central markets and street fairs — you can easily get stuck in the crowd. Set your navigation to the edge of the tourist zone and ride slowly along the river instead.
Look for scooter parking near the far edge of the tourist zone, about 100 meters past where your navigation app stops routing — parking costs around 10,000 VND (~$0.40), and from there you're right at the liveliest part with boats, markets and cafes.
