TL;DR
Mosquitoes are rarely a problem in Nha Trang city. The bigger concern is rove beetles (tomcats), whose contact can cause skin burns.
At Doc Let (Zoklet) beach near Nha Trang, mosquitoes were noticed mainly toward the evening over a four-day stay. Reports suggest they are present, but not in overwhelming numbers.
Recent reports indicate mosquitoes are quite common in Nha Trang — both in hotel rooms and outdoors. Open-air cafes and restaurants tend to have the most. It's advisable to apply repellent spray before going out.
After two evenings in Nha Trang, not a single mosquito or even a fly was spotted. Bringing insect repellent seems unnecessary.
Over seven months of living in Nha Trang, only two or three mosquitoes were encountered total. They may appear near stagnant water. Note: local mosquitoes reportedly don't respond to imported fumigators — buy local brands instead.
Besides mosquitoes, ants and rove beetles (locally called 'tomcats') are present in Nha Trang. Up to three were found inside an apartment. One person was stung on the collarbone and only noticed the next day; another got a burn on the arm from one on the beach. It's rare but worth being aware of.
