Large $500 bills are nearly impossible to exchange in Nha Trang — multiple exchange offices refused them. A workaround: at the airport duty-free on arrival, make several separate purchases (whisky, perfume, accessories) paying with $500 bills and collecting change in smaller denominations. This way $3,500 in $500 bills was successfully broken.

Mir cards work well in Nha Trang. You can withdraw Vietnamese dong from ATMs (e.g. 3 million VND at a time) and pay for most things via QR code. With this setup, USD cash is barely needed.

Chinese yuan gives a better exchange rate than USD when converting to Vietnamese dong. A practical approach: exchange yuan on arrival (e.g. 1,000 CNY), cover daily expenses with UnionPay card and QR payments, and keep USD only for tours or large payments.
