TL;DR
Reports suggest bank-app QR payments can work in Vietnam even when card verification or SMS codes fail. UnionPay is not accepted everywhere, and large QR payments may trigger fraud blocks, so travelers should keep a backup payment method.
A large payment made via Sber QR can be flagged as suspicious, potentially locking the entire banking profile, including app access and chat support. For expensive purchases, it is safer to keep cash or a second card as backup.
UnionPay acceptance appears inconsistent: at Bana Hills, the card was refused, while payment through the Sber QR code was accepted. At tourist attractions, QR payment may be more reliable than using the physical card itself.
Even when SMS login codes were not arriving and account access was problematic, purchases on the ground were still paid successfully via the Sber QR code. In Vietnam, this can be a useful fallback payment option.
