TL;DR
Not all US dollar bills are accepted at the same rate in Nha Trang. Old series bills (2006–2007) and smaller denominations like $50 may be exchanged at a lower rate or refused. New, large-denomination bills get the best rates.
According to a fresh summer 2026 report, US dollar bills dated 2006 and newer can in practice be exchanged without problems at almost any currency exchange point. This contradicts older reports that 2006 bills were often refused.
New-series $50 bills are generally accepted, but it's worth checking in advance — some exchange points offer a slightly lower rate than for $100 bills.
You can convert Vietnamese dong back to US dollars, but the reverse exchange rate is less favorable. It's best not to exchange more dong than you plan to spend.
Dollar bills from the 2007 series may be accepted, but not everywhere and often at a reduced rate. It's advisable to check at several exchange points before committing.
The current USD exchange rate in Nha Trang should be checked on the day of exchange as it fluctuates. Jewelry shops and gold exchange stalls at Dam Market traditionally offer better rates than banks.
Dollar bills from the 2006 series are problematic. Many exchange points in Nha Trang refuse them or offer a significantly lower rate. Bills from 2013 onwards are recommended.
