How to choose the right area to stay in Phu Quoc — what to watch out for?

For May to October, the Grand World area in the north is a convenient base: cafes and restaurants are close by, and typical hotel options there include Radisson, Wyndham, and Vinpearl. This zone is considered a better fit for the summer–autumn season.

Sonasea is seen as a more lived-in and practical area for a longer stay, with decent everyday infrastructure. Notable accommodation there includes Best Western and Novotel. The nearby Marina area also works, but its infrastructure is still weaker.

If daily infrastructure matters most, Duong Dong is worth considering: it is central, with shops and services nearby. The trade-off is that the sea and beach there are generally considered worse than in other parts of the island.

Ong Lang is more often chosen for the sea quality, but the area has a quieter, village-like bungalow feel rather than a large selection of full-scale 5-star resorts.

The south and the northwest of the island are far apart, so if you want both the cable car/waterpark area and the Grand World/'Venice' area, it is more practical to split the trip between two bases instead of commuting. The transfer between these zones is about an hour by taxi.

For one night near Sunset Town to catch the show and cable car, you can try booking accommodation in the Sunset area in the south — but overbooking is a real risk there.

Crown Plaza is a solid choice for the entire stay and worth keeping as your base rather than switching hotels mid-trip.

The Kem Beach area (near New World Phu Quoc resort) is very quiet in January with little to do — not recommended as a base during that season.

Staying in an established neighbourhood is fine, but proximity to construction sites means noise and inconvenience — always check what's being built nearby before booking.

Hotel brands on Phu Quoc can be duplicated — there may be multiple properties under the same name (e.g. several Wyndham or Chez Carol locations). Always verify the exact address on a map, as the newer or better-located property may differ from what you booked.

Some parts of Phu Quoc look developed on the map but are actually remote with no nearby services. Before booking, confirm there are cafes, shops, and transport options close to your hotel.
