Do you need mosquito repellent in Egypt and are jellyfish/lionfish/sharp coral dangerous at the beach?

Based on 1 discussion with 7 participants · Last activity: 8 days ago

TL;DR

Yes, mosquitoes and midges bite in the evenings - bring spray repellent and a plug-in fumigator (or ask at reception). At the beach avoid touching ropes and anything attached to them (they sting), lionfish hide in the closed island's corals and come out after 5pm, and walking barefoot risks cutting your foot on rocks/coral.

What the community said

Sea entry is good with sandy beach, but there have been cases of people cutting their feet on rocks when barefoot - better to wear water shoes.

No mosquitoes inside the room, but they bite outside in the evening. Repellents are available at the hotel reception.

Don't touch ropes in the water or anything attached to them - they host organisms with stinging cells that burn painfully in the sun afterward. Lionfish live in the coral of the closed island area, coming out after 5pm and early morning; none are found under the pontoon. Waves are rare at this resort.

Mosquitoes bit ankles badly at the playground in the evening. None were found in the room, but people recommend running a plug-in fumigator just in case - worth packing one.

Even without shoes you can accidentally step on a rock and cut your foot - one person found a deep cut in the middle of their foot by evening, even though they didn't feel it happen.

Mosquitoes weren't too bad but appeared occasionally, especially in the evening - spray repellent helped. Some travelers got bitten by midges leaving very itchy red spots.

If possible, bring repellent with you - it definitely won't hurt. A leg spray also helps since bites happen in the evenings, though mosquitoes weren't overwhelming.
