TL;DR
Crossing the Verkhny Lars/Kazbegi border checkpoint takes anywhere from 1.5 to 12+ hours depending on season and time of day — it's unpredictable. From the border to Tbilisi's Didube bus station is 3.5-4.5 hours, then another 5 hours from Tbilisi to Batumi.
The drive to the Lars checkpoint takes about an hour, and crossing itself usually takes 1-2 hours, though during peak season people have waited 12+ hours. From there it's 3.5-4.5 hours to Tbilisi's Didube bus station, plus another 5 hours to Batumi.
Real experience: on a Friday evening (arrival at 7:30 PM) the crossing took 1.5 hours, but on a Monday morning (arrival at 6 AM) it took 3.5 hours. Border guards on both sides say wait times are impossible to predict in advance.
There are no shift breaks on the Georgian side, but the Russian side has shift changes at 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM — processing stops about 7 minutes before and pauses for 30-45 minutes, worth factoring into your arrival timing.
