TL;DR
Side itself is walkable and charming, but reaching nearby attractions like Köprülü Canyon or Geynik Canyon without a car or tours is difficult and not ideal.
Geynik Canyon can be visited independently by taking a taxi there. It's a popular spot with plenty of visitors, so navigating without a guide is manageable.
Visiting Side without a package deal or rental car is considered a niche choice. Getting around the surrounding area is quite limited, and most worthwhile attractions require either a car or a booked excursion.
Hotels located in the outer parts of the Side area can feel very isolated without a car. Even reaching Side's historic center requires a taxi, and there's little within walking distance.
